Management is the New War for Virtualization in 2010

Summary:

In his article, Vic Nyman warns that today’s interdependencies of multi-tier applications have created problems which will follow  IT management into 2010. Existing management solutions–such as response times between VMs and clients–don’t support IT operations into the physical realm and how that relates to the virtual infrastructure. In many environments, it’s a struggle to quickly and correctly determine if a problem is related to the network, storage hardware, VMs, applications, or a combination of one or more. Making the issue even more complex, many IT organizations want to move larger, more complicated and business-critical applications onto a virtual infrastructure. This will create even more challenging problems for IT management and, thus, the virtualization war.

The good news is that the improved IT arsenal will include application service management (ASM), a presence which will be critical in 2010.  ASM allows IT support teams to visually monitor the components that comprise an application system, which will redefine what application management should be and improve business performance overall.

Article Quote:

“Traditional monitoring and application performance management tools from the big vendors were not designed to work in concert across the range of environments that support today’s distributed applications: physical, virtual, or cloud.”
