Effective strategies for coaching and developing your employees

Summary:

This insightful blog presented by Debbie Zmorenski provides effective measures on how to improve the relationship between managers and the employees they manage. She suggests that a surprising number of managers and executives use punishment-based feedback rather than the more effective coaching skills presented in this article. She also indicates that this lack of coaching skill is costly to organizations on many levels.

In order perform efficiently as a coach, one must first understand the root causes of poor performance, which include both ability and motivation. Good coaching skills include the ability to determine whether motivation or ability is the issue and then provide the tools with which to optimize performance. Three effective coaching tactics include a culture of ownership and involvement, challenging assignments and constructive criticism. Successful coaching will help create a competitive advantage by strengthening the human potential which could be largely untapped within many organizations.

Article Quote:

“Performance coaching is not about telling your management team what to do; it is about telling them how to get the best results from their people and processes. If you are experiencing mediocre productivity, ongoing conflict or high turnover, you should look first at your management team. They are the root cause for success and failure.”

Many people struggle with identifying goals that would help them fundamentally move down the improvement sequence.  Even more people, if not most, struggle with how to measure achievement of goals based upon data. Understanding this and coaching without blaming or criticizing will get everybody in the organization on the same page.
